Girl power takes over the decks at club for charity gig

THE women will be spinning the decks at a special club night taking place at Silk Road, Colchester, this weekend.

Raising money for breast cancer awareness, the music event will feature three of the county’s best female DJs playing a whole host of funky house tunes.

Among the DJs taking part is DJ Hazey, who is perhaps better known to friends as Hazel Newton, who lives in Wivenhoe.

Born in London, she has lived in various places over the years, but moved to the riverside town with her family when she was 14.

Hazel says: “I’ve been a DJ properly for about seven years now, but I’ve been clubbing a lot longer than that.

“That’s kind of how it began because I was really into the clubbing scene around Colchester but when I got home, I wanted to continue listening.”

Hazel got herself some “proper” decks and started making up her own mix tapes for herself and friends, but it wasn’t until she moved over to Tenerife, taking her decks with her, that she began DJing in public.

She adds: “I was doing guest spots in various bars but then got a residency in one of the big bars out there.”

Since coming back in 2005, she has continued DJing in and around Colchester at such clubs and bars as Route, Karma and Roxi.

Joining the former County High School for Girls pupil on the night will be DJ Jolie who is based in Hatfield Peverel and Colchester’s DJ Chelle.

Hazel says: “It’s going to be a great night. We’re asking everyone to wear pink, even the guys, and everyone will get a breast cancer awareness pin badge.”

Organised by SIIH Promotions and Silk Road, it takes place tomorrow from 9pm to 4am.
