Bring along a teddy for musical fun

THE annual Teddy Bears’ Concert will take place in Colchester’s historic Moot Hall this weekend.

The concert, aimed at children aged three and over, will be given by the Colne Valley Youth Orchestra, under the direction of Nigel Hildreth, at 2.30pm, on Sunday.

As in previous years, the programme will feature a number of well-known classical tunes, such as Strauss’ Radetzky March and the Can-Can from Orpheus and the Underworld, together with singalong nursery numbers like the Ugly Duckling and, of course, the concert’s namesake, the Teddy Bears’ Picnic.

There will also be a chance for youngsters to use percussion instruments, take a turn at conducting the orchestra, and bring their favourite toy along to enjoy the music as well.

Mr Hildreth, youth orchestra music director, said: “This very special concert is a great way to introduce young children to playing a musical instrument, or even playing in an orchestra.

“They can see for themselves all the different instruments, and other youngsters who are not much older then themselves having fun creating great music.”

Mayor, Henry Spyvee, who will be guest of honour, added: “I can’t think of a better way for a family to spend a Sunday afternoon. I hope mums and dads, grandmas and grandads will all turn out with their youngsters and join me for this really lovely and very worthwhile event.”

In aid of the mayor’s charities, tickets are available from the mayor’s office at the Town Hall on 01206 282206, or Mann’s Music, Colchester High Street, priced £5 for adults, £3.50 for under-16s and free for under-twos and cuddly toys. Family tickets, for two adults and two children, cost £15.
