Crossing culture - Verdi opera and Blur documentary at the Odean

TWO very different musical genres will be on show at the Odeon cinema in Colchester next week.

On Monday, the Head Street venue continues its programme of cultural events, with a screening of one of Verdi’s greatest works.

Don Carlo features an all-star cast led by Rolando Villazon in the title role, Marina Poplavskaya as his stepmother Elizabeth of Valois, with whom he has fallen in love, and Ferruccio Furlanetto as his father, Philip II of Spain.

Ferruccio was nominated for an Olivier award for his performance, which formed part of the Royal Opera House’s 2008 season.

Doors open at 6.30pm for 7pm, and tickets are £13.50.

The following night, a documentary about the reforming of indie band Blur will be shown in their home town.

No Distance Left to Run, which includes footage from their sell-out gig at the East Anglian Railway Museum, in Chappel, last June, follows Damon Albarn, Alex James, and Dave Rowntree, as they reunite with Graham Coxon for a series of concerts after a near six-year break.

As well as the concert in Chappel, it contains previously unseen archive material alongside revealing new interviews and reports, recounting Blur’s highs and lows, from Colchester and Goldsmith’s College, to their headline return at Glastonbury and Hyde Park.

Originally there were no plans to show the film in Colchester, but after press coverage in the Gazette and a campaign by local fans, the Odeon has agreed to show it.

The screening starts at 8pm, and tickets are £9.50.
