THERE are still some tickets left to see one of the country’s most exciting bands.
Since crashing on to the mainstream music scene in 2003, British Sea Power have continued to impress music fans and critics alike.
Their debut album, the Decline of British Sea Power, was that classic word of mouth slow burner, which didn’t do all that well on its initial release, but subsequently went on to sales of 60,000, leading to several 1,000-seater gigs.
Now based in Brighton, the four-piece are made up of Yan on vocals and guitar, Noble on guitar, piano, and keyboards, Hamilton on bass, vocals, and guitar and Wood on drums.
Their singular personas are just a small part of their mysterious image, which also includes wearing period uniforms and placing various bits of flora and fauna about the stage while they play, the strangest being a ten-foot bear.
Tours have also included unusual venues, such as the Scillonian Club, on the Isles of Scilly, the St John Boste Social Club, in Kendal, and Carnglaze Caverns, in Cornwall.
Their musical style often contains huge sweeping guitar pop sounds, which has likened them to a variety of groups from the Pixies to Joy Division.
They play Colchester Arts Centre, on July 17, at 8pm, with tickets priced £12.50.
They are available from the box office on 01206 500900, or online at www.colchesterarts centre.com
