ONE of the hottest DJs around will be making a guest appearance at Route nightclub in Colchester this weekend.

DJ Ironik has already produced a number of smash hits, such as Tiny Dancer and Stay With Me, and last year scooped a Mobo nomination for best newcomer.

Still only 21, he started his career at the age of 13 when he began working as a DJ in London clubs, but it wasn’t long before he started getting slots all over Europe.

His first single, So Nice, was released in 2007, and achieved a modest amount of attention on several music channels, particularly Channel U, where it featured in the top three of the viewer request chart.

But it wasn’t until last year and getting signed to Asylum Records, a subsidiary of the Warner Music Group, that he began to make a real mainstream name for himself.

It all kicked off with his first hit single, Stay With Me, which hit the charts at number 11 on downloads alone, then number five on its physical release.

His second single, I Wanna Be Your Man, got to number 35 in the UK chart, quickly followed by the debut album, No Point in Wasting Tears, which managed number 21.

The nominations for best newcomer at the Mobo Awards, and then best newcomer and best music video for Stay With Me at the Urban Music Awards, capped what was quite a year.

He was also nominated for best male music in film at the Screen Nation Film and TV Awards in November 2008, and voted by MTV UK viewers as their third favourite artist after Katy Perry and Duffy.

This year, there has been more of the same, with the release of the third single, Tiny Dancer (Hold Me Closer), which featured grime rap artist Chipmunk and Elton John. The song was released in April and got DJ Ironik his highest chart position so far, number three.

Tomorrow, as part of Route’s iCandy club night, Ironik will be performing Tiny Dancer as well as Stay With Me and more.

Doors open at the Queen Street venue from 10pm. For more information go online at www.routecolchester.co.uk
