A WRITTLE College floristry student has been named a finalist in the prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show’s Florist of the Year competition.

Ayana Shimazu, from Japan, a Foundation Degree Professional Floristry student, had to design and create a fantasy floral tree based on the theme of Alice in Wonderland. Ayane said: “I just missed a bronze medal at the world’s most famous flower show by one point.

“But I was consoled by the fact I was up against very stiff competition from two previous winners, and 11 other very experienced florists. To have got in the finalist’s list at world’s most famous flower show is honour enough.

“It wasn’t just my first competition entry to RHS Chelsea Flower Show, but also my first visit, so the whole experience was meant a unique and challenging time, particularly in the middle of exams.”

One very special visitor walked right past the exhibit. Ayane found herself just inches from The Queen.

Ayana said: “I was absolutely thrilled. I also saw Prince Harry and Prince Charles.

“The whole day was so surreal and will probably never happen again for me. I am so lucky to be a finalist and be involved in the event on press day.”

Preparation of the tree took much hard work and many hours.

Ayana said: “The wired flowers were made with playing cards, spiders’ webs and were very intricate. I even a key for the little door.

“The structure was the biggest thing I have ever made, but in the end it stood straight and secure. I was worried that it would fall on the Queen when she went past!”

Ayana has now completed her Level 5 course and will return to Japan to work in the floral industry.
