Essex County Council has lent its support to the creation of more apprenticeship positions in the county.

The council will help to fund apprenticeships in businesses working in high-growth sectors, such as engineering and health care.

Kevin Bentley, deputy leader and cabinet member for economic growth and infrastructure, said: “We want to encourage young people into work and to provide financial support for companies that are looking to recruit an apprentice.

“The creation of additional apprenticeship places, with further funding from Essex County Council, is part of this process.”

Through the Essex Apprenticeship Programme, which began in 2009, the council has already supported 1,556 employers to recruit 2,745 young people into apprenticeships.

The Essex Apprentice programme provides funding to businesses as an incentive to employ apprentices, aged 16 to 24, in a variety of sectors.

Mr Bentley said: “Apprenticeships provide an excellent way for young people to achieve their full potential through learning as well as supporting employers to generate wealth, jobs and opportunity,.

“Apprentices have a hugely positive impact on business and the local economy.

“I would encourage anyone thinking about taking on an apprentice to contact us and take the leap.

Businesses in the energy, engineering, science, technology, financial, health and social care sectors are particularly sought.”

One of the many businesses to benefit from taking on an apprentice is Carmel Jane Photography.

Business owner Carmel Saulbrey said: “Having an apprentice has meant we have had the time and manpower to try some new marketing techniques which have really paid off.

“Our apprentice, Lydia, is continuing to bring new ideas around marketing and social media to the business.”
