FINDING a job is not just about the academic and work experience skills you may have.

According to Signpost it is also about presenting yourself in the best light in your CV, job application, social media and in person.

Employment adviser Jon Rees, based at Signpost’s centre in Greenstead, Colchester, says: “It is not always the best person who gets that sought-after job, but the person who presents themselves the best.

“This includes social media. Employers may sometimes look up potential candidates on their social media accounts to see what they get up to and how they really are. It is essential you review your social media security settings and content, when applying for work.

“Very simple things are setting up a separate e-mail account for your CV, letters and job search, which is different from your Facebook and other social media accounts. Jobseekers should also think about setting up a separate Facebook account for a job search, as it is very important you present a competent and professional image.

“A very high percentage of recruiters are going to social media sites direct, such as LinkedIn, for their hiring process, without using actual recruiters.”

Signpost is a charity which also has centres in Jaywick and Basildon. Clients can go straight to the centres rather than wait to be referred by the Job Centre.

The centre in the library on Hawthorn Avenue, is offering free workshops on social media at the Colchester centre, with plans to extend it to the Jaywick centre. Other free workshops include self- esteem, easy IT and body language.

With computers and internet access, it is a vital resource for those looking for work, but have no computer at home. Advisers are also on hand to offer guidance and advice on interview skilland careers.

A total of 14,923 people visited the three centres between 2012-2013, of which 1,265 were new visitors.

Jon says: “We have had some positive feedback from those who have attended the course, including those who reviously had no interest in social media and have now been motivated to try and set up a LinkedIn account or review one they have already set-up for job hunting, as well as review security settings.”

“The funding from the Big Lottery and Colchester Carnival has enabled us to provide a free USB memory stick to everyone who attends, to store their CVs and job application work files on the move.”
