‘Hospital didn’t spot my wife’s broken ribs’

A HOSPITAL failed to spot a woman’s broken ribs, it has been claimed.

Shirley Illman, 54, of Iceni Court, Dovercourt, tripped on a fence and landed on her face and chest.

Husband Norman drove her to the Fryatt Hospital, in Dovercourt, but the X-ray facility was closed forcing them to travel to Colchester General Hospital.

Mr Illman, 61, said: “I rushed her off as she was complaining about chest pains. They looked at her at Harwich but they told me to take her to Colchester.

“When we got to Colchester Hospital, all they did was X-ray her face. I asked them to X-ray her chest but they didn’t.

“They sent her home with painkillers.”

For the next week Mrs Illman continued to suffer pain in her chest until the pair returned to the hospital on Thursday.

Mr Illman said: “When I took her back, they did an X-ray and found she had two broken ribs.

“I was really angry. They should have done the X-ray the first time. I’m appalled at the service she got.”

Mr Illman was left frustrated and angry when he had to travel to Colchester despite having a new hospital close to his home.

He added: “What kind of a service do we run where I have to drive my wife with chest pains 20 miles up the road for treatment.

“They say they’re going to start opening more services at the Fryatt Hospital, but when?

“This system is so silly. There are ill people that shouldn’t have to travel that far.”

Andrew Knotts, spokesman for Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We want to provide the best possible care for all our patients.

“If Mrs Illman can get in touch with us, we can investigate the treatment she received.”

Talks are ongoing of extending the Fryatt Hospital X-ray service so it is open daily from 9am to 5pm.

The treatment for broken ribs is painkillers and rest so the hospital acted correctly.

Thankyou for the diagnosis Crosby. I'm sure the poor lady will be re-assured.

And a wasted talent. I don't think its the remedy that's the issue here, its the lack of attention to detail and showing a caring interest in the patients welfare.

Yes, you can't do anything for broken ribs. My husband broke one tripping over and the only treatment is painkillers. Although he was in France and they suggested he bind himself in a stretchy bandage.
My mum fell over at 85 and the Xray actually didn't show anything wrong the first time as for elderly people it is hard to spot on an xray anyway.

Surely the point is, that the patient had chest pains and did not know what was wrong, and despite being in such pain she had to travel a fair distance to attend the hospital twice in order to be correctly diagnosed and told of the recommended fairly simple treatment?

There is a manual-method to find broken ribs.A doctor did it for me at 2.AM in Broomfield Hospital,Chelmsford.
Why aren't X-Ray depts.24/7?

We must remember that X-Rays are in themselves contentious, and could present a danger. Medics are unwilling to give X-Rays on a willy-nilly basis, because of the risks involved.

Recently I suffered a painful wrist, due to a traffic accident. X-Rays showed some anomaly, but were not clear-cut enough to make a 'it's definitely broken' assumption. I was in plaster for two weeks until the doctors decided it wasn't broken, so X-Rays don't always show the full picture (pardon the pun).

I'm glad the lady got there in the end, but like others, I agree there's not much can be done for broken ribs anyway. As for complaining about the 25 minute drive to Colchester, I'd be just happy to know there's a hospital there at our disposal, any time of the day and night.
