Colchester: Hit-and-run death at hospital

Police closed off the main entrance. Picture: STEVE BRADING (76588-c)

Police were today hunting a hit-and-run driver after a patient was run over and killed at Colchester General Hospital.

Access to Colchester General Hospital was blocked by police today as they investigated the man's death.

His body was found in the middle of the main access road to the hospital buildings, off Turner Road.

A police spokesman said today: "We are looking for any motorists or patients who were outside the accident and emergency ward at 4.30am and saw a man walk out with a white gown on."

An Essex Police forensic services tent had been erected over the place where the man's body was found in the early hours of today, and police cars were slewed across the sliproad.

Police were called at 4.30am today to reports of a road accident where the vehicle had left the scene. They had no details of the vehicle involved and were appealing for any witnesses to contact them.

It is believed the man who died came from the Colchester area.

Motorists leaving the site were this morning being stopped and questioned by police.

A spokesman for Essex Rivers Healthcare NHS Trust said: "The incident, which happened on the Colchester General Hospital site, involved a patient who had earlier been in the accident and emergency department. We are currently investigating the circumstances and liaising closely with Essex Police."

  • Anyone with information should contact police on 01206 762512 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

    I don't think it would be fair to identify him publicly in case he has relatives who are unaware. This is, after all, the world wide web, and news travels fast.

    Ive got no idea who this bloke is but he didnt deserve to do like this. Its not fair to judge him if you dont know him. He was obviously loved by a lot of people. No doubt his name and address will be revealed in due course but until then people cant make assumptions about why he died. A little boy has lost his daddy.

    What is this world coming to!!! I don't know this poor man or his family but whatI do know is that you should be ashamed of your self so called english man and the person above, When a tragic death happens and it is published on sites like this I think you will find that it is generally used for exactly this purpose. The purpose being to leave condolences and nice comments and share memories of the poor souls life, nit for people like you to rock the boat and leave idiotic and insensitive remarks like this, because the victims families do read the comments and in most cases find comfort in KIND words from others... So for everyone who is using this as an excuse just to be nasty just think on,Some people have lost sight of the fact that the poor guy has lost his life and has left behind children who have lost a father and greiving relatives for god's sake have some bloody respect!!! My sympathies are with all of this gentleman's family and friends you have obviously lost someone very dear to you I hope the pain eases in time, It may help you to know there is a website called gone too soon where you can set up a memorial this way people have somewhere they can leave messages and post pictures etc , it really helped me XX

    If you can keep your head when all about you
    Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
    If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
    But make allowance for their doubting too:
    If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
    Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
    Or being hated don't give way to hating,
    And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

    If you can dream---and not make dreams your master;
    If you can think---and not make thoughts your aim,
    If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
    And treat those two impostors just the same:.
    If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
    Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
    Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
    And stoop and build'em up with worn-out tools;

    If you can make one heap of all your winnings
    And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
    And lose, and start again at your beginnings,
    And never breathe a word about your loss:
    If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
    To serve your turn long after they are gone,
    And so hold on when there is nothing in you
    Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

    If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
    Or walk with Kings---nor lose the common touch,
    If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
    If all men count with you, but none too much:
    If you can fill the unforgiving minute
    With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
    Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
    And---which is more---you'll be a Man, my son!

    The things we did, the things we said
    Keep coming back to me and make me smile again
    You showed me how to face the truth
    Everything that's good in me I owe to you

    Though the distance that's between us
    Now may seem to be too far
    It will never seperate us
    Deep inside I know you are

    Never gone, never far
    In my heart is where you are
    Always close, everyday
    Every step along the way
    Even though for now we've gotta say goodbye
    I know you will be forever in my life

    I walk alone these empty streets
    There is not a second you're not here with me
    The love you gave, the grace you've shown
    Will always give me strength and be my cornerstone

    Somehow you found a way
    To see the best I have in me
    As long as time goes on
    I swear to you that you will be

    Never gone from me
    If there's one thing I believe
    I will see you somewhere down the road again

    i love you forever and always xXx

    R.I.P. Barry loved and missed by many. Colchester wil never be the same without you! sleep tight babe! my thoughts go out to his family and friends! xXx
