Tendring: Council housing revamp on target
A MULTI-million pound scheme to improve council housing on the coast in the next three years is set to get under way.
Tendring Council says its 3,239 properties will reach the Government's Decent Homes Standard by December 2010.
It has detailed how the £4.185 million will be allocated.
Tendring Council leader David Lines said: "Housing services are on track to deliver the Decent Homes Standard to our several thousand tenants by 2010, something many councils are not able to say."
Tendring Council has to make sure its houses reach the required level in order to qualify for grants.
The criteria includes state of repair, modern facilities and thermal comfort.
Tendring Council's spending plan includes £880,000 to refurbish heating, which will see full central heating installed in properties that are only partially heated.
A total of £460,000 has been allocated to kitchen and bathroom replacement.
Doors and windows, including high-security metal doors at sites targeted by vandals, will be replaced with a £300,000 windfall.
Digital TV aerials will replace the analogue system with a £20,000 cashpot, and disabled adaptations will cost £375,000.
The cost of the design and contract of the work will come to £237,000.
Housing portfolio holder Mark Cossens is set to rubber-stamp the spending plan next week.
