Clark: focus is on winning

SASKIA Clark knows that she and Christina Bassadone have to raise their game if they are to find Olympic glory in China.

West Mersea sailor Clark and skipper Bassadone had a strong finish in the women's 470 Class at the Princess Sofia Trophy in Palma, Majorca, to clinch third place at the European season's opening Olympic Class regatta.

However, the British duo paid for an indifferent start and, with just 133 days to go until the start of the Olympic Games, Clark knows they will have to do better to achieve their aim of a medal in the light winds that are expected to feature at the sailing venue in Qingdao.

In the eight-race series in Majorca, they ended with two third places, before a second position in the final medal race boosted their overall placing to take the bronze medal.

"We had a strong finish in Palma, which to be honest, is something that characterises our sailing," said the 28-year-old West Mersea Yacht Club member.

"For the Games, though, this is not going to be good enough and over the coming regattas we really need to focus on winning from race one.

"We started Palma with a confident outlook which made us take an unnecessary risk on the first start of the regatta, trying and failing to cross the fleet on a port tack, resulting in an average finish.

"With the conditions we are expecting in China we need to sail consistently each day and be able to start each day with the chance of getting a medal as we might not have the luxury to claw our way back though the fleet over the course of the regatta."
