Tournament a success
WITHAM Rugby Club hosted the Witham and District Schools Rugby Tournament for the second successive year.
The event saw pupils from schools around Witham take part in non-contact tag rugby, which was organised in a mini-league and then semi-finals and final.
Year six and year five pupils took part, with every team having at least three girls in the team.
Witham Rugby Club provided The Witham Cup to winners Silver End, while certificates were presented to all schools and participants in addition to the winners and runners-up, St Francis.
The number of teams more than doubled from last year, with 13 teams in this year's tournament compared to five teams last year
Damon Howlett, deputy headteacher at Howbridge CofE (VC) Junior School in Witham, said: "It was a really good afternoon.
"Everything was played in good spirit and all of the teams really enjoyed it.
"One of the best things was that when the pupils weren't playing, they managed to get in some coaching from players from Witham Rugby Club.
"They just want to get youngsters to play rugby and they have a very good junior section at the club.
"Some of the pupils had never played competitive rugby before and it was a great that they could experience something different."
