Treasured memories of Colchester United's football ground are to be recorded for posterity as part of a film about the changing face of Colchester.

Dedicated U's fan Ray Hollingsworth wanted to mark the end of the era of Colchester United at Layer Road, before the club moves to its new ground in north Colchester.

He is compiling a film of memories, and would like to include Gazette readers' recollections of famous days on the terraces.

Mr Hollingsworth, who lives on the Riverside estate in Colchester, is paying for the production, but hopes to sell copies to U's fans and Colchester residents.

He said: "I am trying to encapsulate memories of Layer Road. I would like to hear people's memories of the ground, or their experiences there.

"It does not necessarily have to be football related."

Mr Hollingsworth suggested supporters who saw Colchester United's famous non-league FA Cup run in 1948 might have some good stories to tell, or perhaps U's followers who saw the match against Brentford in the early 1970s, when the Brentford goalie was injured by a dog on the pitch.
