Halstead: Marie Curie fundraising party welcomes hundreds
A woman whose family has been affected by cancer staged a Blooming Great Tea Party for Marie Curie Cancer Care. Jane Acres, 49, held the party at her home in Gardeners Road, Halstead, today, with a barbecue, cream teas, face painting and stalls. “I would say we had a couple of hundred people come on and off during the day,” she said. She is totting up the final amount raised, which will include donations from supporters who have held garage sales. It was the second year she had organised the fundraiser, after her brother-in-law, Steven Hammond, died from a brain tumour, aged 60. read more

Braintree district: Centre for severely bullied children due to open in 2014
A charity hopes to set up the district’s first learning centre for severely bullied children by 2014. Red Balloon was granted planning permission to convert two flats in Cressing Road, Braintree, last year, to educate children who are too frightened to go to school. It is providing online counselling and education via Red Balloon of the Air but the charity is still working to raise enough money to open the education centre. Tony Dunn, trustee and director of Red Balloon Braintree, said it needs to raise between £10,000 and £12,000 by next August. read more

Braintree district: Award for Marks Hall
Marks Hall in Coggeshall has won an award for improving access for disabled visitors. A new bridge leading to the arboretum was built and linked to a new 1,400-metre surfaced path to help wheelchair users and parents with buggies to reach the heart of the estate. The Essex Environment Trust, which gave £20,000 towards the £100,000 project, awarded Marks Hall a certificate of merit for the work. The trust gave out awards to the best projects it has funded that have been completed in the last year. read more
