CABBIE Day has been cancelled.

The popular parade, designed to bring children with learning and physical disabilities from east London to Maldon, is a highlight of the year.

But a lack of volunteers means the special event, which has run since 1952, will not take place this year.

Plume Academy, whose students help feed and entertain the children, confirmed the sad news.

Principal Carl Wakefield said: “We found out, due to a lack of volunteer drivers, the East London Cabbies Outing committee were forced to take the very sad decision to cancel Cabbie Day.

“Obviously our staff and students were extremely disappointed when they found out as this is one of the highlights of the year for us and where we welcome our very special guests into the Plume family for the day whilst ensuring they enjoy a fantastic experience.”

Maldon and Burnham Standard:

Mayor of Maldon Jeanette Stilts said: “I am very sad to see this long running event come to an end and not take place this year.

“I have enjoyed many Cabbie Days and it is such a shame it cannot happen this year. I hope we can get it going again.”

Bob Boyce, head of Maldon District Council’s community services committee, added: “I feel very disappointed for the many children and their families who will not be able to enjoy their usual visit to Maldon and Promenade Park.

“I know the children and their families really look forward to their visit almost as much as we do in welcoming them to the town.”

It is hoped the event, which involves a procession of decorated black cabs travelling down High Street, will return in 2018.Maldon and Burnham Standard:

Mr Wakefield said: “Let’s hope this 65-year-old established tradition will continue next summer.

“We at Plume Academy genuinely hope that turns out to be the case.”

This will be the first time in 65 years the procession will not take place. Last year, more than 80 taxis paraded along the streets with entertainment afterwards.
