GROWING plants out of wellies could be a new trend in Japan, thanks to Colchester’s Skinny Jean Gardeners.

Dale and Lee Connelly, the gardening brothers from CBBC’s Blue Peter, spent a weekend in Nagasaki at a Gardening World Cup, representing the UK.

They did not win the competition, but their garden was described as inspirational.

Lee said: “It was amazing and we had such a great time. Our garden was really well received.

“We were told we came at it from a different perspective and we are privileged to have taken part.”

Some of the plants in the main piece called “Four Gardens that Made Us” were ruined in the rain.

The duo kept in high spirits, however, and their colourful display won over judges.

Lee said: “We had a lot of colour to make it fun.

“We grew flowers in wellies, it’s not something they have seen before so hopefully we inspired people.”

Their entry for the worldwide competition was split into four sections – allotment, rooftop, beach and country.

The final was held at Huis Ten Bosch, which means “house in the forest”.

It is a theme park which doubles as home to the Gardening World Cup.
