LATE night revellers who cause trouble in the town centre could face a blanket ban from bars - thanks to a new Facebook page.

Around 20 members of Colchester Pubwatch have joined a page called Colchester Bar Ban where CCTV images and descriptions of troublemakers can be shared almost instantly.

Only bar managers will be able to join and the aim is to inform door staff as soon as incidents happen inside or outside venues.

The decision to ban suspects will be made by each bar manager, but Osman Rasih, owner of Silk Road, in St Botolph’s Street, warned blanket bans would be brought against the most serious offenders.

He said anyone suspected of violence would face a lifetime barring order from Silk Road, which has an impressive 48 CCTV cameras keeping watch on customers.

He said: “If we can stop people messing about using the CCTV, and all the bars are sharing this information, people will start behaving.

“I’m quite excited about it and I’m confident it’s going to work. It’s going to be a wake-up call for everybody.

“Personally if it’s a serious assault, I don’t want them in my bar again, full stop.”

Although Mr Rasih said incidents in Queen Street and St Botolph’s Street were “very, very rare”, police are appealing to find a man in his twenties after a man in his forties was knocked unconscious by a punch to the head.

The assault happened in Queen Street at 1am on October 16 and the victim had to be taken to Colchester General Hospital for treatment.

Mike Lilley, Colchester councillor responsible for public safety, said: “It’s the same old story - another assault by some mindless moron who’s had too much to drink and can’t control themselves.

“I believe premises are doing the best they can - it’s down to the individuals. Someone must know who this person is and they need to inform the police straight away.”

He said the council would back the Colchester Bar Ban scheme.

He said: “It’s what we want to see.”

Mr Rasih hopes the first posts will be shared from this weekend.

The man police want to speak to in relation to the Queen Street assault  (pictured) is white, around 20 years old, of slim build with wavy brown hair and wearing a black shirt, black jeans and tan coloured shoes.
