Rail boss apologises for "unacceptable" delay at Colchester

Gazette: Rail boss apologises for "unacceptable" delay at Colchester Rail boss apologises for "unacceptable" delay at Colchester

THE boss of Britain’s railways has admitted north Essex commuters deserve a better service than the one they are getting.

Thousands of commuters were left stranded after engineering work ran on longer than it should have on the first weekend of a £7million upgrade track upgrade.

Speaking in a House of Commons Transport Committee hearing yesterday, Mark Carne, chief executive of Network Rail, said: “The Colchester over running was totally unacceptable.

“It caused problems for many thousands of passengers that morning.

“It was part of a transition from one contractor to another.”

The delays happened on Monday, May 19.

The track was due to be clear by 4am yesterday, but set backs meant passengers were told to stay away during the morning peak.

In total, 17 services from Colchester to London were cancelled between 5am and 9am, leaving commuters unable to get to work.

Over running engineering work on a single day is the least of commuters problems. There is not a single day goes by without late trains, short trains, cancelled trains and trains that are curtailed before their destination. All due to signal failures, points failures, train faults, crew shortages etc etc. Not to mention the substantial decline in cleanliness since Abellio took over. Abellio never seem short of a new excuse for an unacceptable service

Don't agree. I travel from Witham to Liverpool St every day and the Abellio service is pretty good. There's no point complaining to them about the signals, points or track - that's down to Network Rail.

Like whittle1 I think the service has improved and the problems mentioned in article are the creation of Network Rail.

I'm not saying things are perfect and there is still a great deal of room for improvement but at least Abellio are on the right track (no pun intended)
