Police want to identify a man caught on CCTV at the time of two break-ins in Hedingham Road, Halstead.
Panes of glass were smashed in the back doors of two adjacent homes which were broken into on Saturday between 8.45am and 11am.
Investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Becky Young, said: "A messy search of both properties was then made but at this time it appears that nothing was taken from either house.
"The cost of repairing the damage is likely to be more than £100.
"A man had called at another house nearby at around the same time that the burglaries took place; this property had CCTV fitted and he was caught on camera.
"He is of interest to our enquiries and if anyone recognises him or has any other information that could assist our investigation they can contact me at Braintree Police Station on 101 or ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
