Road closure causing "major problems" for residents and businesses
12:00pm Saturday 8th March 2014 in News
Improvement works to replace a faulty road surface are being done without consideration for drivers, a resident claims.
Essex Highways is carrying out overnight roadworks in Earls Colne High Street, from 8pm to 5am, until Saturday, March 15.
The proposed improvements were originally advertised in October to take place in December, but were delayed to avoid disruption over the Christmas perod.
Colne Engaine resident Donna Tuck said: “It's causing major problems for both residents and businesses.
“The road is closed overnight from 8pm, meaning people who live in the village can't get to their homes.
“The road definitely needs repairing, but some bright spark has decided it's better to do the whole road at once, rather than one side at a time, thereby keeping the road open.”
An Essex Highways spokesman said: “The road is not wide enough to safely accommodate a working area including safety zone plus a lane open to vehicle traffic.
“The safety of residents, users, and operatives is the prime consideration when designing and delivering works “While some disturbance to residents and users was inevitable we have programmed and resourced the delivery of these essential works to keep the disturbance to a minimum.”
