GREEN-fingered Colcestrians are being encouraged to help make Colchester bloom this summer.

Colchester in Bloom has launched its 2014 campaign and its committee is hoping for more people than ever to take part.

Last year, the town was given a gold award in Anglia in Bloom and a silver gilt in Britain in Bloom.

Dave Harris, who jointly organises the event, said: “This year, we want more people than ever to take part.

“It was great last year, but this year we’re saying, bring your friends.

“Let’s get as many people on board as possible, whether you have an allotment or you just care about your street, come and get involved.”

Mr Harris is also aiming to get more schools on board.

Last year, 25 of the borough’s 44 primary and secondary schools took part.

He added: “The key to making this a success is making people care and that starts in schools.”

The committee meets for its annual meeting on Thursday at the Colchester Quaker Meeting House, in Church Street, from 7.30pm.
