Minister lobbied over A120

Gazette: Minister lobbied over A120 Minister lobbied over A120

CALLS to dual the A120 between Braintree and Marks Tey have been put before senior politicians.

Witham MP Priti Patel raised the issue during a meeting with Roads Minister Robert Goodwill.

Ms Patel said: "The A120 is one of the most important economic links in the country and yet the section between Marks Tey and Braintree has become one of the most congested and dangerous roads in England.

"The minster is fully aware of the problems with this road and open to listening to proposals to upgrade it.”

What it actually needs is a bypass, not dualling. The road isn't wide enough to dual. Somebody needs to take an actual look at the road before making these daft statements.

I can't quite understand your point.
Where is this new by-pass going to go??.
I would have thought that upgrading the current A120 to dual-carriage way would be the best answer, not another road built.

Can you explain please?

It should be made into a Dual carriageway and link onto the A12.

sKorch, it's a dual carriageway, not dual-carriage way, just to let you know. ;)

I stand corrected, a simple search on Google would have shown my mistake, lax behaviour on my behalf I'm afraid.

It beggars belief that in the 21st century an important road such as the A120 slows and narrows to what is really just a village lane between Braintree and Marks Tey.

What this means is that the A120 appears to be too narrow between the residential buildings on either side to fit a dual carriageway.
Compulsory purchasing and demolition would be unfavourable as some buildings are of historical interest and it would blight the area.
Building a dual carriageway bypass somewhere south of the existing road could he considered but this too would no doubt encroach on residential properties. Not an easy solution I'm affraid.

There was a plan some years ago to build a new dual carriageway from Feering to Braintree, across farm land. It would have meant 2 or 3 miles added to the journey for people coming from Harwich and Colchester, and would have added to pressure on the A12 between Marks Tey and Feering, but it would have given us that dual cariageway that everyone wants, all for the bargain price of £520 million (at prices of several years ago). A property developer was prepared to pay for it all, in return for planning permission to build monster new housing estates at each end of this new bit of road.
Does anyone else remember this? It was all over the Gazette and Standard at the time.
