A CAMPAIGN to keep speed limits in Colchester to 20mph is being set up.

UK-wide campaigners 20’s Plenty For Us is looking for volunteers to join its Colchester group.

It claims as a result of its work, more than 8million people live in areas where 20mph zones have been implemented.

Rod King, national campaign leader, said: “So many communities have decided that 20 is plenty in their streets.

“Now it’s time for Colchester borough to do the same.

“Many people in the town have wanted 20mph for a long time and the new Colchester group will draw together supporters to bring pressure on Essex County Council.”

Will Bramhill, the group’s Colchester representative, added: “I’m a driver as well as a cyclist, pedestrian and bus user, so I know that it is perfectly possible to drive at 20mph and I know the huge benefits it brings.

“My first task will be to build up the group. I’ll be working with the existing 20’s Plenty groups in Chelmsford, Basildon and Epping Forest, and would love to hear from anyone who wants to lead a campaign in Harwich, Clacton, Braintree, Witham or Halstead.”

A petition has been set up at 20splentyforcolchester.org.uk and on change.org in support of the campaign.
