A man who gives up his time to make sure his neighbourhood is safe has received a commendation in a national award.

Bill Nairn, chairman of the Neighbourhood Action Panel in New Town and Berechurch, was given the honour by the Social Landlords Crime and Nuisance Group for his long-term commitment to the town.

He said: “I would like to thank everyone who nominated me. I’m honoured to have this award. I don’t go out and do this for awards.”

Ann Carey, tenant chair of Colchester Borough Homes Safer Neighbourhood Group put him forward for the award. She said: “Bill has been a positive role model and has challenged the statutory agencies to improve safety and the environment.

“His commitment is unwavering.

He supports vulnerable people within his community as well as tackling unacceptable behaviour.
