Six jobs at risk at Colchester Blockbuster as DVD rental chain goes into administration
3:44pm Tuesday 29th October 2013 in News
DVD rental chain Blockbuster has gone into administration for the second time this year.
The company initially ran into trouble in January, but was saved in February when it was sold to Gordon Brothers Europe.
The Colchester store, in Sheepen Road, was saved in that deal, but now its six jobs are at risk.
A Gordon Brothers Europe spokeswoman said attempts have been made to turn Blockbuster’s fortunes around by restructuring the business, but attempts to develop a new digital outlet were unsuccessful.
She added: “Efforts will now be focused on giving the company a chance of future survival through a reduced and different business model in the hope that a buyer will be found.”
Some 32 people have lost their jobs in the company’s head office but all stores will continue to trade as normal while a buyer is found.
If a buyer isn’t found, some stores will need to close.
Blockbuster has 264 stores across the country and employs 2,000 staff.
