A MEDICAL expert is carrying out a detailed review of the evidence in a baby rape case.

Chelmsford Crown Court heard the girl was taken to Colchester General Hospital on August 10 this year, aged 14 weeks.

She was transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital with suspected multiple skull fractures, paralysis of the right hand side of her body and several injuries of a sexual nature.

She was taken off life support a week later.

The baby’s mum, aged 24 and from Clacton, and her boyfriend, aged 32 and from Clacton, were arrested.

They were charged with grevious bodily harm, attempted rape and neglect when they appeared at Colchester Magistrates' Court on August 15, but did not enter pleas.

No charges were put to the pair when they appeared in court yesterday.

David Holborn, prosecuting, said the charges may change following a detailed review of the medical evidence in the case.

This is being looked at by consultant forensic pathologist Dr David Rouse.

Once the results are known, Mr Holborn told the court an indictment detailing the charges will be drawn up.

This is expected to be put to the couple when they return to court on Friday, December 13.

There was no application for bail and they were remanded in custody.

A provisional date in May next year has been selected for a trial if the defendants deny the charges.

The baby cannot be identified because she is the victim of an alleged sexual assault.

It also means the defendants cannot be named becauee it could lead to her being identified.
