Sir Bob welcomes free school meals announcement
COLCHESTER’S MP Sir Bob Russell has welcomed the Deputy Prime Minister’s announcement that all children at infant schools will be entitled to free school meals.
The announcement by Nick Clegg will mean that children in Reception, Year One and Year Two will all be allowed to have free school meals - worth about £400 a year for each child.
Sir Bob backed Mr Clegg's hope that in due course it will be possible to fund free school meals for older children in primary schools.
For years Sir Bob has campaigned in support of the school meals service and in 2004 he spoke on the topic in the House of Commons when they were scrapped by the Tory-controlled Essex County Council.
Sir Bob added: "Reading my speech of nine years ago, I only wish that the Labour Government of the day had taken notice of what I said. My predictions and warnings about the need for proper nourishment and diet, and increasing obesity amongst children, have come true.
"I am therefore grateful that it is thanks to Liberal Democrats in the Coalition Government that this matter is being addressed - starting with free school meals for infant children. I look forward to its introduction and, in due course, it being extended to all children of primary school age."
