Car park bid to attract extra business to Stanway

PLANS to build a 105-space car park in Stanway in a bid to attract more businesses to the area look set to go ahead.
The Tollgate Partnership wants to turn land off London Road, in Stanway, into a car park in a bid to attract tenants to the Tollgate Business Centre.
The 114 spaces attached to the 12 business units, which is about nine spaces per business, has been cited as a reason some prospective tenants has not moved in.
A report submitted to Colchester Council planning committee stated: “The applicant has submitted evidence indicating interest in the business park has been retracted on the basis of the number of car parking spaces provided, with businesses choosing to locate elsewhere.”
Sonia Sykes, borough councillor for Stanway, said: “This will open up the empty buildings and bring employment to the area.
“It is a great idea.”
The plans were unanimously backed by councillors, subject to officers investigating the impact the new car park would have on a pubic footpath which is thought to run through the land.
If the impact is found to be too great on the public right of way, the application will be sent back to councillors to decide.
