ON this day back in 1992, Colchester United returned to the Football League, after a two-year absence.

The U's thumped Barrow 5-0, to secure the GM Vauxhall Conference title.

Roy McDonough's side had battled it out all season with Wycombe Wanderers, to clinch promotion.

But despite the Chairboys winning their home game against Witton Albion - the U's FA Trophy Final opponents that year - and finishing level on points with Colchester, it was McDonough's side that claimed the title.

Gazette:

Having just missed out on being crowned Conference champions after being pipped by Barnet in 1991, the U's ensured they would go one better this time around.

Colchester put bottom club Barrow to the sword at Layer Road on May 2, 1992.

Mike Masters gave the U's an eighth-minute lead with a superb strike and doubled their advantage seven minutes later, to put them in control.

Barrow were then reduced to ten men when Phil Power was sent off by future World Cup referee Graham Poll, following a clash with Jason Cook.

Nicky Smith made it 3-0 just after half-time and McDonough netted a fourth for Colchester, after the hour mark.

Gazette:

Masters completed his hat-trick for the U's with 13 minutes remaining with an excellent long-range strike.

It sealed Colchester's title win and a few days later, McDonough's men went on to beat Witton Albion 3-1 in the FA Trophy Final at Wembley, to complete the non-league double.

In 2022, Colchester's non-league double-winning side reunited to celebrate their glorious 1991-92 season, at Colchester Town Hall.
